Carl is a biblical scholar, minister, husband, father and life coach. In his mid-twenties he had a powerful encounter with God and saw miraculous healings as a result. He passionately shares these stories and empowers others to fulfill their God-given potential.

Should we listen to teachers of God’s word or is the unction of the Holy Spirit enough for us to get by? Scriptures taken out of context can be dangerous. Carl continues his review of John’s epistle, as we discuss the notion of purification or sanctification, and the importance of not ‘practicing’ sin. As believers we may struggle with sin on occasion, but practitioners of sin, are not really Christians to begin with. The law of sowing and reaping is still in effect. Let’s continue our study as we find out specifically why Jesus came to earth…

Here is a complete transcript of the broadcast (below)…

Welcome friend to part three of the first epistle of John and remember in previous broadcasts, John the Apostle discussed those who deny original sin, Adamic sin from the garden of Eden, as many religions do in fact. We’re the only ones, us Christians do acknowledge that we are sinners, all the other religions don’t Okay, and so we have embraced the truth if you don’t believe in original sin, John the Apostle said you were a self-deceiver. You had believed a lie and therefore you’re in no need of a Savior and you cannot attain salvation. In fact, they’re accusing God of lying by saying that they’re not sinners. Sin is universal it has a universal quality that affects all mankind. The people who deny sin the Word of God is not in such people.

That’s how bold John was in his statement. And then John talked about the fact that Christ is the propitiation of our sins, right? That’s from the Greek word ‘Hillemos’ meaning the atoning sacrifice. Remember in the Old Testament once a year on the Day of Atonement The priest would sprinkle blood on the eastern side of the mercy seat Which was the golden lid of the Ark of the Covenant and Christ himself is our mercy seat Amen Christ is our atonement and he has covered every one of our sins and for those Christians who sinned since becoming Christians then 1st John 1:9, is a wonderful verse that allows us to confess that sin and to be cleansed from all unrighteousness. Amen. Then in verses 12 through 14 of chapter 2, which I didn’t really have time to get into yesterday the Apostle John Addressed three different kinds of Christians.

They were Christians in three different stages of growth. Little children, young men and fathers and he addresses them specifically in each case and I ask you to read that I want you to be reading the Word of God Alongside me right now if you’re by your desk or at home You can do that crack open your Bible to first John and let’s read it together But if you’re driving just wait till you get home and then you can read it then But let’s continue our study now of the first book of John chapter 2 verse 24, “let that therefore abide in you which you have heard from the beginning, if (Condition) that which you have heard from the beginning shall remain in you. You also shall continue in the son and in the father and this is the promise that he has promised us even eternal life. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.“ Whoever seducers in this verse they would be the Nicolaitans I talked about yesterday the hyper grace movement that tells you there’s no consequence for sins in this New Testament Dispensation that’s a lie.

Okay, Galatians 6:7 read it for yourself, “Beloved God is not mocked whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap” that’s in the New Testament, right? That’s not an Old Testament verse, so we had the Gnostics and the Nicolaitans who were seducing people away from the truth in the time of John’s gospel and this Epistle in particular but notice the onus is that we should continue to abide in the word that we heard from the beginning, right? That it may remain in us and that friend is the devotional aspect of your Christian Walk, spending time with God daily in his word and in prayer and taking time to listen to him. That is the word abiding in you. Because the cares of this world and false doctrine would cause you to move away from the truth in Christ friend, I’ve known people who’ve got saved the same time as I did. They’re not walking with Jesus anymore okay, it takes a commitment.

All right No, I’m not gonna get into once saved always saved and can you lose your salvation? I may discuss this further down the road All right But frankly if you love someone you’re gonna want to spend time with them and stick closely to them and if we love the Lord We’re going to do that. Amen now in verse 27 He says “but the anointing which you’ve received of him abides in you and you need not that any man teach you but as the same Anointing teaches you of all things and is truth and is no lie And even as it has taught you you shall abide in him.” Okay, that is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who will bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever The Lord Jesus said to you it is the Holy Spirit who brings the scriptures to your remembrance I remember reading the Word of God when I wasn’t saved in 1997, I had this random idea on a Saturday to go and buy an NIV Bible. I sat down and tried to read it but I had not been born again at the time.

I tell you right now. I couldn’t comprehend it I wasn’t saved at that time and I didn’t gain salvation through that reading but once I did get saved the Holy Spirit taught me he brought all things to my remembrance the scriptures that I Uploaded into my hard drive were brought back by the software That is the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is the software that brings the usage of the hardware You must store scriptures up on your hard drive and let the Holy Spirit the software Download them for you at a time of his choosing when it’s needed. Amen Notice in verse 28 it says “and now little children abide in him that when he shall appear who’s he talking about Jesus? We may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming if you know that he is righteous. You know that everyone that does righteousness is born of him.” Friend If we’re born again, we should be showing some form of righteousness in our life.

There should be evidence of that transformation as I said before of being a new creature in Christ. But notice that there is a shame of not being ready for his appearing and in all cases in the New Testament. There is an excitement of Jesus’s soon return Which is the rapture of the church as far as we’re concerned and for the Jew they will have to endure the tribulation Unless they come to Christ beforehand but we need to be ready for his coming and the onus therefore is to preach the gospel and occupy until he comes number one, but also to keep ourselves sanctified and holy in his sight that we may be pure and keep our lives godly before his return and when and if we do that we will have confidence before him because as we’ll find out later in this chapter. And further on in the book as We sin we lose confidence in God because our hearts condemn us and we don’t want to be experiencing that.

The unction of the Holy Spirit the indwelling presence is what administers gifts through us It covers believers like a cloak and the Holy Spirit flows these gifts from us. And it’s so exciting friend to experience that and to be a part of someone’s healing or to give a word of knowledge or wisdom or to move in prophecy. It is a wonderful thing friend I can’t say enough about it in verse 28 as I’ve said John is reminding the believers that only those who are abiding in him will be caught up in the rapture of the church and friend you need to have an onus of Abiding in Jesus Christ with your actions your belief your devotion Oh pastor, you sound a little bit religious today. Listen, I don’t know if you’ve looked out in the world recently. But things are going positively nuts Okay, the light is getting lighter and the dark is getting darker and the enemy is showing his hand on all levels in all mechanisms of politics in the global Geopolitical scene the enemy is showing his hand that maybe there is a new world order out there that everybody was talking about and actually people Are openly discussing it now.

It was a conspiracy theory, but no longer there is a desire to Unite globally and friend. This is an Antichrist force that is working against the body of Christ and it will never Manifest while we’re on the earth because we are the restrainer the air we can see precursors to it But it will never have its way until the restraining power of the Holy Spirit from the indwelling presence of the church is removed Only then can the son of perdition finally set up his desirous one world order Oh one of my favorite verses friend This is chapter 3 verse 1, “Behold what manner of love the father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God?” Therefore the world knows us not because it knew him not friend Not everyone is a child of God nor a son of God Interchangeable terms only those who’ve received Christ Jesus man is a part of God’s creation But those who’ve received Christ are the sons of God Amen verse 2, “beloved now are we the sons of God and it does not yet appear what we shall be But we know that when he shall appear that’s Jesus at his coming.“ We shall be like him for we shall see him as he is and we haven’t received our glorified bodies yet, right? That’s the next stage. We’re gonna have a body like Jesus Christ.

We’re gonna eat. We’re gonna walk through walls Don’t ask me how but that’s the final stage of our redemption. It hasn’t happened to our physical body yet It certainly happened to our spirit man and our soul is being worked on but the final Physical manifestation of what we shall be like has not yet been revealed to us Verse 3, “and every man that has put this hope in him purifies himself Even as he is pure.“ What is the hope that John is talking about here? It’s the hope of Christ’s return and therefore the onus is on us to purify ourselves Amen verse 4, “whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law for sin is the transgression of the law and you know that he was manifested to take away our sins and in him is no sin.” Amen, That’s Jesus. “Whoever abides in him sins not whoever sins has not seen him neither known him now.” This verse has caused confusion down the years. Obviously, Christians can sin otherwise in first John 1:9, John would not be showing us how to be forgiven of those sins. But if you look at the Greek here a better way of saying this is somebody who practices sin someone who Regularly practices it and if you’re a Christian friend, you know that the Holy Spirit is not going to allow you to do that comfortably All right, we are not sin practitioners.

We get convicted, we feel bad, we feel shameful because of it and the Lord ministers to us and he restores us But someone who is practicing sin really never has known God in the first place All right, or they have reached a horrible place called reprobation where they have thrown off all restraint and passed through licentiousness and passed through lasciviousness to the point where their conscience is so seared that they don’t care anymore and Friend, I know none of you people are in that position All right Verse 8, “he that commits sin is of the devil for the devil sins from the beginning for this purpose. The Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil.” Friend, let’s end it there.

Oh one of my most favorite verses of all time sin entered through man because of Satan’s beguiling Eve and He was a liar and deceiver from the beginning He is a practitioner of sin but Jesus came to end that practice and he manifested on this earth that he might destroy the works of The devil and then you might ask well, what are these works? Good question much of the devil’s works are carried out in the unseen realm in the spiritual entity the realities called the principalities powers rulers of darkness and spiritually wicked in high places the main works that the enemy uses against us are accusations deception and temptations. Those Triumvirates are what he uses against us friend and the purpose of Jesus coming is to destroy them and as we use our delegated authority we can overcome every aspect that the devil throws against us.

As far as we’re concerned Christ made a show of Satan openly as a defeated King in front of all his cohorts and Therefore we need to remind him of his defeat daily to destroy in the authorized version means to be rendered powerless or Ineffective and that’s our job friend to make sure Satan remains ineffective in our lives as far as we’re concerned Satan is a whipped pup Jesus defeated him It’s our job to keep our foot on his head and remind him of what our Lord did. Amen. I Hope you’re enjoying this series on the book of 1st John.

Six Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Why did Jesus come to earth according to 1 John?

Jesus came to earth to be the propitiation for our sins—meaning He is the atoning sacrifice who covers and removes our sins, making reconciliation between God and humanity possible. No other God has ever accomplished this, nor prophesied their coming in advance, as Christ did.

2. Did Jesus come to destroy anything?

Yes, Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. His mission included rendering Satan powerless by defeating the spiritual forces of darkness that deceive, accuse, and tempt humanity, in His death, burial and resurrection. We now move in the conferred authority Christ granted to the church by his resurrection from the dead.

3. Is Jesus’ purpose limited to forgiveness of sins?

No, while Jesus does forgive and cleanse us from sin, He also came to give us authority to overcome the devil’s schemes and to restore the full spectrum of righteousness in believers’ lives, by His Word.

4. Why is confessing sin important if Jesus already came to atone for sin?

Confession is vital because it allows believers to maintain fellowship with God and be cleansed from ongoing sins, after their salvation, which was also obtained via confession and believing in the heart. Jesus’ atonement is a once and for all sacrifice which covers Adamic sin, but ongoing confession for personal sins (post salvation), renews our relationship and keeps our conscience clear. By doing so we can have confidence before Him.

5. How does Jesus’ coming relate to defeating Satan’s influence in our lives?

By coming to earth, Jesus defeated Satan openly, making him powerless (“destroyed” in the Greek sense means to render ineffective). Believers share in this victory by resisting temptation and holding fast to the truth of Christ’s victory. Believers are now equipped by God’s dunamis power to overcome Satan and his minions in the form of healing, deliverance and liberation from all addictions.

6. What is the ultimate hope tied to Jesus’ coming?

Jesus came to secure eternal life for believers and to prepare us for His return, when we will be transformed to be like Him and live forever in God’s presence, free from sin and death. This will occur at the rapture of the church and the receipt of our immortal bodies, no longer subject to earthly corruption.
