Carl is a biblical scholar, minister, husband, father and life coach. In his mid-twenties he had a powerful encounter with God and saw miraculous healings as a result. He passionately shares these stories and empowers others to fulfill their God-given potential.

This week Carl begins a new series on the authority believers have through the name of Jesus and the vital distinction between petitioning the Heavenly Father and ‘commanding’ in Christ’s name. Carl examines how Jesus obtained His exalted name through inheritance and conquest over death and demonic forces. Drawing from Mark 16, Hebrews, Philippians, Colossians, Ephesians, and James, Carl emphasizes that believers are called to actively exercise Christ’s delegated authority rather than remain spiritually passive. This message challenges Christians to recognize Satan as a defeated foe, by resisting him with confidence because God’s power will back us up. Join him now…

Here is a complete transcript of the broadcast (below)…

Friend, we’re talking today about using the name of Jesus. Wonderful thing to be able to put into practice the commanding of the demonic with the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. But friend, we have to use this name, and if you don’t use it, your pastor is not going to do it for you. Do you know that? There’s a difference between asking the Father in the name of Jesus and commanding in the name of Jesus. That would be enforcing your authority and power on the earth. And friend, we’re going to introduce a series of lessons here talking about using the name. When can we do it? How did Jesus’s name become so powerful to begin with? Then we’re going to even introduce the three types of church. Which type of church are you in? And we’re going to get into that later on in separate broadcasts. But friend, don’t be apathetic in the body of Christ. You are the body of the head. The head can’t do anything unless the body does something. Jesus is giving instructions to you from the head to move his body. And if you don’t respond, friend, he is limited on this earth. Let’s join me now live in session at DHOP. The name of Jesus. Instead of petitioning vertically, we’re talking about the name. What does it mean? How can we use it? So there’s a difference between asking and commanding. You’re asking the Father in the name of Jesus. That’s a petition, asking God for stuff. And then we have commanding in the name of Jesus, which is enforcing his authority and power on the earth. Amen. There’s a difference between asking the Father. A lot of this stuff is elementary, but we’re going to go through the elementary stuff again because some people are confusing the two.

And we have cookies as a key point. Let me read the story to you. Paul Harvey once told the story of a three-year-old boy at the grocery store with his mother. She sternly told him before entering the store, no chocolate chip cookies for you, so don’t even ask. In the store, she put him in the little child seat in the cart, and they wheeled down the aisles. He was quiet until he got to the cookie aisle. He saw those delicious chocolate chip cookies. Mom, can I have a chocolate chip cookie? No, I told you, don’t even ask. He sat down. They went down the aisles, but later came to the cookie aisle again. He asked them again. Sit down and be quiet. I said no. Finally arriving at the checkout lane, the little boy knew it was his last chance. He had to get some cookies. He had to do something quick. He stood up in the seat and shouted as loud as he could, in the name of Jesus, I will have some chocolate chip cookies. Everyone around him began to laugh and applaud this little boy. And because of the generosity of the shoppers, this kid left with 23 boxes of chocolate chip cookies. Amen. He took his authority, right? Because he used the name of Jesus, all joking aside. Is that a coincidence? Maybe not. There’s certain things that God can’t do for us, and we’re going to explore that. Are there signs following you? Mark 16, 14 through 19, very famous passage. Afterward, he appeared, Jesus, unto the 11, and as they sat eating and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart. Notice unbelief and hardness of heart go together. Because they believed not them which had seen him, Jesus, after he was resurrected. And he said to them, go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. And get this, he that believes and is baptized and shall be saved, but he that believe not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe in my name. They shall cast out devils. They will speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents. And if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them.

They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. All of those things in the name of Jesus. Amen? So the question is, are there signs following us? We’re spirit-filled people. The outpouring of Pentecost came in Acts chapter 2. Peter, who was running away from people who asked whether he knew Jesus or not, was around saying in the name of Jesus, rise up and walk. Later on in the book of Acts, he was emboldened because of the spirit-filled lifestyle that he had, because of the outpouring that God poured into him. Amen? We’re the same. We’re no different, right? Are there signs following us? Oh, that’s just for the disciples, pastor. That’s just for them. A special dispensation of time. Friend, we’re in the church age now. There is no change of dispensation. It’s the same church, right? Whether it’s the early church or the latter church, right? So religious people have talked us out of this. Well, you know, that was for them. That’s not for now. And by the way, demons don’t exist today. This is America, amen? We’ll explore that. What is the power of a name? Proverbs 22:1 says, “a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches and loving favor rather than silver and gold.” Amen. A good name can be achieved in three ways. You can be born with it. You could be a Rockefeller. You could be the king of England. You could be a Rothschild, not saying that those people are good or bad, just giving an example. Number two, it can be conferred upon you. You can be adopted, right? Judah Ben-Hur, if you’ve seen the movie, was adopted by a Roman centurion and he became famous because he was adopted. It was conferred, amen?

Or you can be made great by the achievements that you do. Martin Luther King, for example. We know what he did. Gandhi. Other people, right? Who opposed that evil British empire. That’s an example right there where Gandhi made a name for himself. Three ways. How did Jesus do it? Well, the truth is his name, he was inherited a name. Hebrews 1.4 makes that clear. Then he was bestowed a name in Philippians 2.9, but he also made a name through conquest. Amen? He died and was resurrected, raised again and beat death, hell and the grave. And so through his miraculous power, he made a name for himself. It was given to him at birth. It was bestowed upon him. There’s over 200 names that are in scripture. The good shepherd, the light of the world, the bread of life, et cetera. Jesus covered all three, amen? The power of a name by inheritance. Hebrews 1:1-4, “God who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in times past unto the fathers by the prophets, have in these last days spoken unto us by his son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds, who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high”. Jesus is seated. Why? Because his work is done. It’s finished. I’m going to relax. I’m going to intercede. I’m seated at the right hand of the father. Amen? I’m going to intercede for my bride, the saints on the earth. Amen? Being made so much better than the angels as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than those angels.

Why? Because he created the worlds. So by inheritance, he has this name. The son of God preexisted before he came to the earth, right? John 1 says he took on flesh and became flesh. Only on the cross did Jesus ever feel that rejection because he became sin and the father had to turn away because he became sin and he felt that rejection for the first time. So that we don’t have to feel reproach, we don’t have to feel shame because Jesus took our shame for us. Amen? So he had a name by inheritance. Philippians 2, 9 through 11, “wherefore God also has exalted him, Jesus, and given him, Jesus, a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father,” voluntarily or involuntarily, I might add, because everybody’s going to confess that Jesus is Lord, whether they do it voluntarily in this lifetime or whether they do it at the great white throne judgment, okay, where they are going to be cast into hell, but they will have to acknowledge the Lord first. Jesus’s name is above every name, including cancer, AIDS, tuberculosis, addiction, poverty, sickness, disease, whatever you want to say it, Jesus’s name is above it, amen? And so if we understand the power that is in this name and that when we use it we have authority in the second heaven, the spiritual realm, amen? Another example of that is Ephesians 1:20, which he wrought in Christ when he, this is the father talking, when he raised him, Jesus, from the dead and sat him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above principality, power, might, and dominion, and every name that is named, okay? There are ruling authorities in the second heaven that we are opposed to and they are opposing us, spirits in the second heaven, okay?

Our rational mind doesn’t fully grasp that and some would say the more educated you get, you know, the less need, you know, we don’t really need the name of Jesus because we have all these books and lexicons and concordances, and listen, Peter and John had no lexicon and concordance, amen? They went into the temple and said in the name of Jesus, rise up and walk, that’s all they had, right? They didn’t have an iPad or an iPod or a projector, they just had the name. We didn’t have to look up the King James Version and the ESV and the ASV and the NASB, none of that stuff, right? As much as they’re valued, so there’s power in that name. So Jesus’ name was given by inheritance, then he was bestowed a name, right here, it says, God the Father gave him a name which is above every name, and of course, in the third example, he had a name by conquest, right? Colossians 2:15, “and having spoiled principalities and powers, Jesus made a show of them openly, triumphing over them, right?” In the olden days, when a king was conquered, they’d put him in a cage and they’d throw him on a cart and they’d pull him through the streets and everybody got to throw their favorite tomatoes and potatoes and leeks, carrots, lettuce, whatever you want to do, man, just throw it at the king and make a complete mockery of him because his power had been stripped. That is what Jesus did to Satan. As far as we’re concerned, he is a whipped pup, amen? But only if we enforce the authority we’ve been given. I always add that part, right? We can have the name, we can have the seated in heavenly places spiritual position, but if we don’t speak the word, how is the demon going to be cast out? Well, I’m going to pray to the Father, let’s pray to the Father that the demon be cast out. No, nowhere in scripture are you to pray to the Father about anything to do with the devil.

You are supposed to command him to leave, amen? James 4:7 is another example, submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee. If you look at that word flee in Greek, it means run in terror, run in terror, right? Not just, oh, I’m going to go now, I’ll be back later, see ya. No, it’s adios, bye, amen? So the Phillips translation said, Jesus disarmed the principalities which fought against him. He exposed them, shattered them. They are empty and defeated and he is triumphant, amen? Somebody woke up. We don’t want to war against Satan because he’s already defeated. I’ll say it again. We don’t want to war against Satan because he’s already defeated. Now, this is so important that you get this. We are an occupying army. We follow the commander in chief. There’s a difference and we’re going to talk about the three types of church that are on the earth today. We’re going to talk about that in the coming slides. We want to get into the mindset that the work is already done so that when something comes against us, we don’t get all fretful and start sweating and, oh no, the devil’s here. That’s not how we’re going to do it, right? We’re going to say, in the name of Jesus, you go. And that’s it. You don’t even have to shout it because you know your authority. When a king says it’s time for war, he barely whispers. It’s like, yeah, we’re going to go to war. It’s going to happen. Yeah. Bring the 25,000 men and let’s go tomorrow. It doesn’t have to be a shout, right? Because it’s an instruction. It’s a command. Amen? Hebrews 2:14 says that Satan was brought to naught and he no longer has the power of death as far as Christians are concerned, right? Because those who are in Christ Jesus are a part of his body, right? He’s the head, we’re the body. Does Satan have the power of death over the world? Yes, he does. He sure does. He sure does. The three types of church, militant, defeated, and triumphant. Friend, that’s the end of our first session. We’re going to get into the types of churches tomorrow. Where do you see yourself in which type of church? I will keep you on tender hooks until tomorrow. Good night, God bless, and remember to spread the good news.

Mark 16 Signs Following Believers

Six Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the difference between praying in the name of Jesus and commanding in the name of Jesus?

Praying in the name of Jesus is petitioning the Heavenly Father according to God’s Word and will. Commanding in the name of Jesus is exercising the authority Christ has bestowed to believers over demonic powers and spiritual opposition. Scripture shows that believers must pray to the Heavenly Father but also use the authority of Jesus’ name to resist the devil and enforce Christ’s victory on earth.

2. Why is the name of Jesus so powerful?

The name of Jesus carries supreme authority because He is the Son of God, and was exalted by the Heavenly Father above every name, after triumphing over sin, death, and Satan through His bodily death and bodily resurrection. Philippians 2:9–11 declares that ‘every’ knee will bow to Christ at the judgment and in this life. Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (voluntarily or involuntarily) at the judgment.

3. Do the signs in Mark 16 still apply to believers today?

According to Scripture, the signs Jesus described in Mark 16 accompany those who believe in the name of Jesus Christ. These include casting out demons, praying for the sick, and operating in the power of the Holy Spirit. The New Testament presents these as part of the ministry of the Church rather than being limited to the original apostles. Dispensationalists often negate God’s power to the time of the apostles. This is a cop out. Faith is required in all ministerial endeavors and God is not pleased without it (Heb 11:6).

4. Can every Christian use the authority of Jesus’ name?

Yes. Every believer has been given authority through Jesus Christ to resist the devil, proclaim the gospel, and minister in His name. This authority is exercised through faith, obedience to God’s Word, and dependence on the Holy Spirit rather than personal ability or status.=

5. Why should believers command the devil instead of praying for God to remove him?

The Bible teaches that believers are to resist the devil directly through the authority Christ has given them. God cannot do it for us. We must enforce our authority. James 4:7 instructs Christians to submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee. Jesus has already won the victory, and believers are called to enforce that victory by exercising their God-given authority in His name.

6. What does it mean that Jesus defeated Satan?

Through Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, He conquered sin, death, and the powers of darkness. Colossians 2:15 teaches that Christ disarmed principalities, powers and triumphed over them publicly, following his victory at Golgotha. Because of His finished work, believers do not fight the devil for victory per se—they stand in the victory Christ has already secured and exercise His authority through His name. Christians are an occupying force on the earth, enforcing the authority Christ already won for them. We fight the good fight of faith (1 Tim 6:12), not the devil, as he’s already defeated.
